A book as a gift for those who remain, an invitation to rediscover or even discover for the first time the work of our era’s greatest icons. It began with David Bowie and Prince, followed by Aretha Franklin and Karl Lagerfeld, and most recently Tina Turner and David Lynch: Iconic figures who have accompanied us throughout our lives died suddenly. Hamburg-based illustrator Alex Solman dedicates unique illustrations to these personalities from the worlds of art, music, and science. Sometimes he depicts the deceased with straight lines and dry humor; other times with psychedelic brushstrokes and sincere mourning. “Staying Alive” presents 210 portraits of the greatest figures of our time, 80 of which are accompanied by pithy short texts. They depict people who have achieved so much that they have been etched into our cultural memory; that they have become part of our own history. A book that does not intend to be a tribute to the deceased, but rather a gift for the survivors. And an invitation to re-explore, or discover for the first time, the work of our era’s greatest idols. On Wednesday, October 14, Alex Solman and Gereon Klug will present this book as part of Leseland Hessen at Centralstation.
