Description

The jug is broken. That much is certain. Everything else will be debated in court. Marthe Rull is on trial; she accuses Ruprecht, her daughter Eve’s fiancé, of breaking the jug during a nighttime visit to Eve’s room. Ruprecht, however, accuses an unknown person who gained access to the house and smashed the jug through the window while fleeing from him. Eve herself remains silent at first, intimidated by the events of the night. And on the bench? There sits Judge Adam, who has several bandaged injuries, he fell at home. At least, that’s what he claims. In fact, it was he who, the evening before, pressured young Eve with lies about her fiancé’s impending conscription into the military. Adam pressures her and holds out the prospect that she could save her lover from this fate if… When Ruprecht, who appears to have been deceived, unexpectedly breaks down the locked door, the judge flees and injures himself. Now Adam puts himself on trial in full view of the public. Sometimes with threats, sometimes with flattery, he tries to conceal his guilt and divert suspicion onto others. But his vivid imagination is no match for the truth. This courtroom drama by Heinrich von Kleist becomes a comedy above all because of the audacity with which those in power lie to maintain their power, thus drawing a parallel to the present day. The truth doesn’t matter in the slightest. Instead, even the question of who the real victim is is called into question. Using shameless tactics, the patriarchy fights for what it believes is rightfully its, no matter what gets destroyed in the process. Drama, Baby!
