A young man is chased by a snake, faints, meets the bird-man Papageno, falls in love upon seeing a portrait, and promises the mother of the woman in the portrait, who appears from storm clouds, that he will rescue her daughter from the clutches of a villain... Clearly a fairy tale, right? Yet Mozart’s *The Magic Flute* is more than just a fairy tale with folk characters. The story, which at first glance seems so simple, can just as easily be read and presented as a Masonic drama of ideas, a parable about coming of age, or a theatrical rite of passage. Yet it never loses its immediate impact. Thus, “The Magic Flute” is world theater in the best sense: an opportunity for young and old alike to experience the world through the medium of theater.
