Iiro Rantala: TRINITY in Darmstadt

Description

Iiro Rantala, Kaisa Mäensivu, and Morten Lund celebrate the magic of that first moment, in a setting that breathes new life into jazz standards. Trinity consists of Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala, New York-based bassist Kaisa Mäensivu, and Danish drummer Morten Lund. Three musicians who entered the studio together for the first time, and that is precisely what makes it so compelling. Without extensive preparation, but with all the more openness and curiosity, they created an intimate album full of jazz standards, recorded in a light-filled salon at Château Palmer in Bordeaux. Rantala’s approach: no elaborate arrangements, no experimentation for experimentation’s sake, but rather a radically honest look at what lies at the heart of these pieces. Classics like “Smile,” “In a Sentimental Mood,” and “The Days of Wine and Roses” become little stories full of warmth, clarity, and musical maturity. “Trinity” is a trio that doesn’t seek to dazzle, but rather to shine, spontaneously, with a deep understanding of one another and of the music. On Friday, October 23, these three exceptional jazz musicians will be performing at the Centralstation.
