To mark their 10th anniversary, Jan Galega Brönnimann (Switzerland), Moussa Cissokho (Senegal), and Omri Hason (Israel) are releasing their third CD, “I Nia Yelle.” In Mandinka, an indigenous language of West Africa, this means “Open Your Eyes.” JMO stands not only for the initials of the three musicians but also for the three main influences in their music: Jazz – Mandinka – Orient Their first two CDs, “Al nge taa” and “Dandoula Tala,” were internationally acclaimed by the press and audiences alike. JMO’s music revives the art of storytelling. The crystal-clear sound of the kora (a traditional African 22-string harp) meets the rich, smoky tones of the bass clarinet and is supported by Omri Hason’s various percussion instruments. The trio transcends boundaries between traditional and modern sounds from Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. The repertoire is composed by all three musicians and reflects their diverse cultural influences. Influenced by the cultural heritage of West African griot songs, Moussa Cissokho sings about contemporary life in Africa and Europe. His lyrics deal with longing, mysterious rivers, and experiences at border controls in Europe. He belongs to the 42nd generation of the great kora dynasty and the Cissokho griot family, which has shaped the tradition of West African music for over 1,000 years.
