Are couples who argue the better lovers? Or do marriages and relationships work best in boundless harmony? Beatrice and Benedict are arguably the most famous bickering couple in theater history, and it’s not just because no one knows whether they’ll end up together, the happy ending of this Shakespearean comedy is by the skin of their teeth. For the beautiful Italian world of romantic entanglements is only seemingly free of violence and cheerful. Not only have the men just emerged from a war marked by murder and mayhem, but even in peacetime, the rules of coexistence remain brutal. The mere suspicion of a premarital flirtation is enough for a father to disown his daughter, for a potentially deadly duel to be arranged, and for a malicious schemer to gloat. For as long as there are losers, the war is never over. And Beatrice and Benedict? The couple, seemingly above it all, bicker and taunt each other beyond all the turmoil, regardless of the consequences. The greatest possible common ground in constant discord, if that doesn’t give cause for hope. Leander Haußmann, director of films such as “Sonnenallee” and a theater legend, reinterprets one of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies in Darmstadt, aiming to return to the origins of theater, when actors still traveled the country with a wagon.
