Science in the Spotlight: Science Slam Darmstadt

Science, exciting, accessible, and funny. Who will win the “battle” for the best presentation? Just like in a poetry slam, the audience decides! At a science slam, almost anything is possible: Scientists and researchers are sent into the ring together to explain their respective specialized topics to a lay audience in such a clear and entertaining way that attendees head home with sore laughing muscles, new knowledge, and exciting insights. Whether they’re early-career scientists or renowned researchers: On stage, everyone is equal, what counts is performance, creativity, and the ability to explain, all limited to just 10 minutes per presentation. Sometimes dramatic, sometimes abstract, rarely below the belt but often laced with dark humor, and always delivered with a wink and respect, supposedly dry scientific topics are transformed into a successful evening’s entertainment. From unicorns to lemurs, from feminist topics to those rich in climate change, we’ve seen quite a lot over the years. But whether serious or witty: whoever can most inspire, educate, and amaze the audience wins! Science Slams have since caught on in many cities and regularly fill venues ranging from small auditoriums to large halls. But they actually originated in Darmstadt! Alex Dreppec launched the format in 2006 and continues to host our “original” event to this day.
