The story
On 9 November 1994, physicists at GSI in Darmstadt fired nickel ions at a lead target and made the first atoms of element 110. They lasted milliseconds before decaying. In 2003 the element was officially named darmstadtium, which gave the city its own square on the periodic table, and the congress centre borrowed the name a few years later.
