On August 29, the Klause will be transformed into a tavern. Music, meze, and long conversations, just like at the kitchen tables and in the gardens of the Aegean. We’re bringing the atmosphere of Turkish meyhanes, Greek taverns, and Balkan hospitality to Darmstadt. Not a set program to work through, but an evening that just happens. Starting at 5 p.m.,We’ll provide fresh meze, salad, and melon. If you’d like, bring something homemade to share, a dessert, fruit, or a little something. It’s great if you do, but no one has to. The most important thing you bring is yourself. The Music Gürkan from Inan’s Music School kicks off the afternoon with traditional pieces from Turkey and the Aegean, accompanied by Emir and Hüseyin and Mary Hail. As the sun sets, Hüseyin Köroğlu takes over. For over three decades, he’s been one of the musicians who hold Darmstadt’s cultural community together. Food and Drink Admission is free; food is on a donation basis. Give whatever you think the evening is worth. By the way As the conceptual drink is rakı, a little information about it: When you add water to raki or ouzo, the clear drink turns milky white. This is called the ouzo effect, and researchers at TU Darmstadt have actually used it for experiments in fluid mechanics. A nice reminder that even in a shared glass, there’s still something to discover. Come as you are, stay as long as you like.
