Countless nights. Even more drinks. And probably a few stories where, to this day, we’re not entirely sure if they really happened. On October 16, Schrill & Laut turns 15, and we want to celebrate this together with vielbunt, you, and all the people who, over the past decade and a half, have danced with us, flirted, made out, partied, and turned the Schlosskeller into a piece of Darmstadt’s queer history over the past decade and a half. We’ll kick things off at 10 p.m. with our anniversary champagne reception, together with vielbunt. Let’s raise a glass to 15 years of Schrill & Laut, after all, you only turn 15 once. And unlike back then, we’re now even allowed to drink champagne completely legally. Come in full drag, and the first drink is on us! Whether you’re a Queen, a King, a Creature, or a creation that even the tax office can’t categorize: Anyone who shows up in drag that evening gets a free drink at the bar. We really can’t offer you a better reason for a little extravagance. And now we need you and your old hard drives! 15 years of Schrill & Laut also mean 15 years of memories. Our own archive, however, has a few little memory lapses here and there, maybe the nights were just too good. That’s why we’re collecting your photos from 15 years of Schrill & Laut. You can send us your pictures. We want to showcase a selection of them at the anniversary party in the Schlosskeller and look back together on hairstyles, outfits, people, and decisions we might make differently today. www.instagram.com/schrillundlaut The dancing starts at 11 p.m. DJ Leo Yamane will take over the decks and provide the soundtrack for the next 15 years, or at least for this one night. Amid old memories and new stories, we’ll celebrate exactly what Schrill & Laut has been all about for 15 years: queer encounters, loud music, a little bit of chaos, and a whole lot of life shared together. So dig out those old photos, slip into drag or your favorite party outfit, and raise a glass with us. 10 p.m. – Anniversary champagne reception with vielbunt 11 p.m. – Party with DJ Leo Yamane One free drink for everyone who comes in full drag Your Schrill & Laut memories from the past 15 years 15 years of Schrill & Laut. We may not remember everything. But obviously, it was good enough to keep going for 15 years. If you mention anywhere in Germany to older gay men and lesbians that you’re from Darmstadt, some of them’s eyes light up: “I used to go to the Schlosskeller on Sundays!” they’ll say. Starting in the 1980s, generations of gay and lesbian people in the Rhine-Main region and beyond partied at the “Gay and Lesbian Disco.” The fact that the party always took place on Sunday evenings, and meant a hangover the next day in class or at work, didn’t bother anyone. It was simply too good to pass up. For years, the scene magazine GAB often featured the following note: “Student crowd. High proportion of lesbians.” That was both a warning and a promise. At a time when there weren’t many safe spaces for lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and trans people, the Schlosskeller became a gay pilgrimage site early on. With over 40 years under its belt, “S&L” is one of the oldest gay parties in the universe, yet it has always stayed young at heart. Just like Madonna, Beyoncé, and Cher, the party has constantly reinvented itself. The biggest makeover took place in 2011: The gay and lesbian party became “Schrill und Laut,” Sunday became Friday, and friendship turned into love: Since then, the Schlosskeller and vielbunt have been co-organizers, planning every party with dedication and meticulous attention to detail. Since then, there’s been a different theme every month, one that no one can really take too seriously. DJs who manage to keep everyone glued to the dance floor, and quirky drag queens who act as hosts. Every now and then there are events that surprise even the regulars, but for everyone else, “Schrill und Laut” is simply life-changing: people who are usually pretty laid-back go into a frenzy on the dance floor, and more than a few straight guests have had their “awakening” at the Schlosskeller. So the third Friday of the month remains the highlight for Queers & Friends who are in the mood to dance, meet people, and party. At Schrill und Laut, you’ll find the love of your life, or just for one night.
