The story
Steubenplatz takes its name from Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, the Prussian officer who trained George Washington's Continental Army, so Darmstadt's art hall stands on a square honouring a transatlantic drillmaster. The building that went up there in 1957 made daylight and transparency its entire argument, which counted as a quiet piece of politics after 1944.
