The story
The square carries the name of a Luise while the column at its centre carries a Ludwig, which is why locals say they will meet unter dem Lui rather than at Luisenplatz. Most of the historic buildings that once framed it burned in September 1944, so the ring of facades you see today covers roughly two centuries of architecture in a single circle.
