The story
Like other European orangeries, this one doubled as a winter ballroom, so guests really did dance among the citrus tubs. When the roof burned in the 1944 air raid the walls survived, precisely because they had been built thick enough to hold heat for the trees, and that is what made a faithful restoration possible.
