The community's synagogue of 1988 and the memorial to the one burned in 1938
The story
The old synagogue was thought to be gone entirely. Then, during building work in the 2000s, its foundations turned up on the grounds of the Klinikum Darmstadt, and instead of clearing them the city preserved them where they lay as the Gedenkstätte Liberale Synagoge. An accidental find became the physical link between the building burned in 1938 and the one consecrated in 1988.
