Central memorial to the victims of the Brandnacht, inside the chapel ruin
The story
The city had the means to rebuild this church and chose not to. Leaving the walls open to the sky was a decision taken in 1954, and it turned a ruin into the central memorial for the roughly 11,000 people who died in one night in September 1944. Forty years later Thomas Duttenhoefer added the bronze figure, because a cross on its own was felt to say too little about what had actually happened here.
