The city lake below Mathildenhöhe, still Darmstadt's favourite place to swim
The story
When Landgrave Georg I had the lake recorded in 1567 it was a practical fire pond, not a beach. For decades fences divided the shores into a women's bath and a men's bath with separate jetties, a fair snapshot of 19th century bathing manners. In severe winters the Woog froze right through and turned into a city-wide ice rink that drew thousands.
