Gilded onion domes above the Lily Basin, built for the last Russian empress
The story
Local lore says wagonloads of Russian earth were spread under the foundations so that Nicholas II could pray on home soil while visiting his wife's family. The craftsmen and the fittings certainly did come from St Petersburg. After 1914 the imperial couple never returned, and a chapel built for private family visits became the last quiet trace of a world that ended four years later.
