Hirtenwiese Menhir Site
Neolithic standing stones in a meadow reserve, the only site of its kind in Hesse
The story
In 1951 a farmer had one of the stones blown up and the pieces tipped into a nearby bomb crater. The site survived because a local historian, Heinrich Gunkel, worked out what it actually was and documented at least fourteen granite porphyry stones in 1966 and 1967. Seven of them still stand exactly where somebody set them down at least four thousand years ago.
