Vivarium Darmstadt
A compact municipal zoo built around living habitats rather than big paddocks
The story
The word vivarium is more than two thousand years old. The Roman writer Varro used it for carefully managed fish ponds, and choosing it in the 1960s said something about the intention here. This was never meant to be a zoo of large paddocks. It was built around habitats under glass, and the outdoor animals came later.
