A rose park east of Mathildenhöhe, with the grand ducal mausoleums
The story
The hill was a garden long before it was a rose garden. Grand Duchess Wilhelmine had the princely orchards laid out as an English landscape park from 1810, with winding paths and open views instead of straight lines, and the formal rosarium only arrived a century later under Ernst Ludwig. The two layers still sit on top of each other, which is why the park feels loose at the edges and strict in the middle.
