Olbrich's five-gabled tower on Mathildenhöhe, with the best view in the city
The story
Local lore reads the five gables as a raised hand, Ernst Ludwig's greeting and blessing to his bride, which is where the nickname comes from. Fewer people know that the plateau under the neighbouring Exhibition Hall hides a municipal water reservoir, a quiet piece of the modern infrastructure the Grand Duke pushed for. Olbrich had little time to enjoy the acclaim: he died in 1908, the year the tower was finished.
