A grid of pollarded plane trees on Mathildenhöhe, with Hoetger's sculptures
The story
The sculptures between the trees are not decoration added later. Bernhard Hoetger made them for the 1914 exhibition as a single cycle about birth, life and death, and he designed them for exactly these positions among exactly these trunks. Stand at the right spot on the edge of the grove and the five-gabled Wedding Tower lines up with the golden domes of the Russian Chapel, which is a fair hint at how carefully the whole hill was composed.
